Jura’s 2017 release, commemorating that year’s Tastival, is wonderfully well-balanced for a cask-strength whisky. Aged initially in bourbon casks and thereafter divided between American oak bourbon barrels and port pipes, it’s fruity, zesty and sweet.

Tonight’s dram takes me (virtually) to my most favorite Islay distillery, The Isle of Jura for their Tastival 2017 – a dram I’ve been searching for since 2017, and the 19th dram I’ve tasted from Jura. It opens with creamy glazed pineapple, honey, and loads of vanilla, followed by orange peel, walnuts, red plumbs, raspberries, and cinnamon, then maltiness, black pepper, bitter dark chocolate, and a bit of ash (not smoke, but ash, in a good, earthy way), and finally black liquorice, lemon zest, and some bitter herbs. The creamy full-mouthfeel and thin-but-clingy legs deliver a nice long spicy finish that balances sweet and bitter perfectly. This is a complex dram, worthy of slow study and contemplation.

Drink slow, drink long, drink a variety, drink often.
