Originally liqueurs were used to promote health in the Middle Ages – but thankfully now they’re simply used for pure enjoyment of their wonderful taste and creamy texture. Liqueurs are often featured in vibrant cocktails as a finishing ingredient – or they’re occasionally used as a digestif to cleanse the palate after a meal. But these incredibly diverse drinks have much more to them.

There are a few criteria that liqueurs must meet before they are able to pass as a liqueur. They must contain some additional flavours – often herbs, fruits and spices, but some manufacturers have been known to experiment! Liqueurs must also be 15% ABV, with at least 100g of sugar per litre – so they’re a real sweet treat!
