Highland single malts simply cannot be pigeonholed – as a vague rule they’re often big-bodied, powerful and smoky, but there are obvious exceptions which tempt and delight in equal measure.
There’s the grassily intense spirits of Glengoyne, the delightfully dark Ardmore, and not forgetting the rich and fruity Aberfeldy which remains a favourite of many.
The Highland region is so diverse and varied, whisky lovers will find every kind of single malt they could ever wish for within these very boundaries. Highland distilleries account for around one quarter of the celebrated malt whisky industry in Scotland, and from coast to coast, there is something for all tastes and palates.
The much-loved Glenmorangie, a worldwide best-seller, hails from this region, and there are plenty of big names in the Highlands, but there are also artisan distilleries creating unique blends and unforgettable tastes – it’s worth exploring the region in-depth to uncover some true delights of the single malt world.
