Caol Ila

Now part of Diageo, Caol Ila is a distillery which has known its fair share of ups and downs. Derived from a Gaelic term which means ‘Sound of Islay’, Caol Ila’s picturesque location overlooking the strait between Islay and Jura has made it one of the most beautiful and successful distilleries in Scotland.

Purpose-built with six copper stills and the ability to produce 7m litres of spirits every year, this much-loved Scottish distillery has a wider range than its sister venue, Lagavulin, and its large scale production helps to keep many popular whiskies in steady supply. Despite closing down during World War II, and various other changes in ownership, Caol Ila is now renowned for its peaty single malts, which are used in blend whiskies like Chivas Regal.
