What makes Islay special is its dramatic sensory signature, yet the considerable variation within it. For an experienced whisky drinker, exploring Islay is about finding which peat style, which smoke level, which cask influences, and which distillery style you prefer. A novice, on the other hand, can gain valuable experience and insight from exploring Islay’s depth and variety. Learn more about Islay Scotch in our comprehensive guide on the Scottish whisky regions.

Why is Islay Scotch so smoky?

Islay is perhaps the most iconic “smoky” Scotch region, though not all whiskies here are overpoweringly peat‑laden. Historically, peat was used liberally in malting; smoke and maritime influence define much of the character. Each distillery has its own take: some use heavy peat, others moderate peat, and some have entire brands with no peat at all!

Islay Scotch flavour vs other Scotch regions

The difference between Islay Scotch and flavours from other famous Scottish whisky regions can appear subtle to the uninitiated, but when you taste them, it all becomes clear. Islay whisky can often feature an intense peat smoke, and we’ve outlined how other regions may differ:

    • Speyside- The northeastern Scotland variant focuses on sherry-cask ageing and non-peated barley, encouraging sweetness and a gentle spice.
    • Campbeltown- Perhaps the second smokiest Scotch region, Campbeltown offers a unique flavour with salty, sweet, and rich notes.
    • Highlands- Pinning down the exact flavour of Highland Scotch can be difficult. There is a wide range of fruity profiles, as well as rich, spicy bottles.

    • Lowlands- These distilleries are known for triple-distilling their whisky, which often contributes to a light, citrusy taste.
