Fondly known to many as ‘Queen of the Hebrides’ Islay has gleaned a reputation for its vibrant, diverse array of distilleries. The picturesque isle currently boasts eight different distilleries, all producing totally unique whiskies.
From Islay arise rich amber fluids, the likes of which can’t be found anywhere else – not even in mainland Scotland. It’s rumoured that the art of distillation was first introduced to the island by Irish monks – but if the Irish laid the foundations for crafting whisky, it was the Scots who breathed life into the process and transformed it into the full-flavoured and complex spirits that we know today. Renowned for their smoky characteristics and distinct flavours, these single malts are celebrated and beloved across the world.
