Led by the early efforts of Suntory, one of the world’s few mountain distilleries, Japanese spirits have taken the global scene by storm in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Yamazaki is at the forefront of this success. Our selection of multi-layered single malts is perfect for luxury collections and exotic tasting sessions. What is the difference between Yamazaki Distiller’s Reserve and Yamazaki 12 Year Old?
The composition of both bottles is a major difference. The Distiller’s Reserve blends younger malt with older malt and is matured in Bordeaux wine casks, Sherry casks, and Mizunara oak. The 12 Year Old, in comparison, is strictly aged for at least a dozen years and is matured in American, Spanish, and Mizunara oak. Flavour-wise, the reserve features strong berry notes and a bright profile, while the 12-year-old offers a delicate, complex mix of dried fruit, honeyed malt, and light spice.
What tasting notes can I expect from a Yamazaki single malt?
To appropriately break down what to expect from a Yamazaki single malt, we should segment our description into the three essential stages. The nose, palate, and finish.
-
Nose: Rich fruit scents ranging from berries to citrus, hints of Japanese Mizunara incense.
-
Palate: Smooth and sweet textures that provide fruity, rich, chocolate-like, and often spicy flavours.
-
Finish: Lingering hints of vanilla, often combined with warming spice that settles pleasantly.
Is Yamazaki 18-Year-Old worth the premium price tag?
Some collectors may be deterred by the premium price of Yamazaki 18 Year Old, but we believe the opportunity to experience finely aged Japanese whisky is one worth taking. The superb quality and taste that have garnered consistent rave reviews are worth the price tag alone, but the rarity and prestige of the bottle make it a must-have for collectors of limited-edition items. The unique woody incense, aroma and flavour are hard to identify anywhere else, so a Yamazaki 18-year will truly stand alone in your drinks cabinet.
