Founded in 1888 by Andrés Brugal Montaner, a Spanish national living in the Dominican Republic, Brugal & Co is a renowned family run rum brand that is now in it’s fifth generation.Whilst living in Cuba, Andrés became an expert in making rum and when he moved to Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic he set up the Brugal & Co Distillery.
Although Brugal produced a number of different kinds of rum from the start, he became most well know for his dark rum, and it is this that would go on to help create a tradition of dark rum from the island. Brugal is still found all over the Dominican Republic, and it’s production today mirrors that of how it was done back in 1888 - using locally sourced sugar cane which is distilled and filtered, then aged in oak barrels to create a unique taste.Despite being fifth generation family run, The Edrington Group, owners of brands such as The Famous Grouse and Highland Park, purchased a controlling interest in Brugal & Co in 2008 - however production still remains in it’s spiritual home of Dominican Republic.
